I read a quote not too long ago and it said, “If you want to know where your heart is look to where your mind goes when it wanders”.
Right now it’s catching a cab in the Meatpacking District, being careful not to trip in my heels while crossing the cobblestone streets. I’m on my way to happy hour with a friend in the Lower East Side. Adjusting my skirt, and applying lip gloss in the back seat while I remind my editor on the phone to send me an important email.
When it’s not giving warm hugs and friendly smiles on Essex St., it’s back home with mom. Driving her around, taking her to brunch, and buying her the things she would never buy for herself. Because I promised her that once I “made it”, she would never pay for another meal ever again.
And when the lights go down in the city, it gets turned up. With her bests looking her best. Breaking necks, but never hearts. Trading shoes, and stories of my last, first kiss. Her first, last kiss. And everything in between.
But after all is said and done. And my mind is tired of meeting deadlines, paying bills, making memories, and catching dreams. It gets into bed, under the covers, and goes to you. It remembers your smile, and the way your face feels in between my hands. And it thinks about all the things it wishes I could’ve said. Like I like you, and I miss you.
For where my mind wanders, my heart is not far behind. Actually, it’s leading the way. And no matter how hard I try to go astray, it seems to always lead me back to you.
