Dear Diary – Broke and Beautiful Edition.

On June 21st I attended my very first Giants game without drinking beer since … since … damn, since I was able to legally purchase alcohol. I didn’t give it up because I’m a raging alcoholic (although that may be questionable), I gave it up because my mom bought me a 30-day Crunch membership and I knew that there would be no chance of seeing any results  if I continued to drink the way I normally did. Truth be told, I’ve always ate pretty healthy, but most of my carbs are via hops and barley. I haven’t been blogging about it, but since the beginning of June I’ve lost two pounds and am back to a comfortable eating/working out regimen. When I say “comfortable” I simply mean that I now have leeway to splurge without feeling guilty. Blah, blee, bloo. How about I just share some pictures and yummy recipes?

My girl Ren brought me back some chocolate, macadamia nut pancake mix from her trip to Hawaii. Although I was a little weary of how healthy they would be, I didn’t want it to go to waste and just so happened to run out of strawberries for my usual morning shake. Surprisingly, they were only 180 calories per serving and I only ended up eating one of them because the top cake was too thick (recipe called for only 1/4 cup of water. I used reduced fat milk and kept adding until I found the right consistency). I topped it with agave nectar instead of syrup, cottage cheese instead of whipped cream, and blueberries that I simmered with a little water for a minute or so. Cock and balls, it was fucking delicious.

I also took a stab at sweet potato hash. Definitely not the healthy choice, but since my mom doesn’t believe in turkey bacon, I added regular bacon to it in addition to red onions and garlic. Topped it with an egg over easy and called it a day. Going to attempt to poach the egg next time.

Made some semi-homemade spaghetti and meatballs for me and my mom one night as well. I used Trader Joe’s brand turkey meatballs, and basil tomato sauce. I added garlic, bell peppers, mushrooms, and used brown rice noodles as well as soy mozzarella. Again, bomb.com. You can’t even taste the difference between the cheese and noodles, I promise.

And no nutrition post is complete without a a quinoa dish. It’s the easiest thing to make a meal out of, and so versatile. For this recipe, I used cherry tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, reduced fat feta, lemon juice, a little olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste.

Now it’s story time. Since my gym membership expired, I just run outdoors and do floor work at home. I have no problem with this, because I enjoy the outdoors and it’s been ridiculously beautiful outside lately. A few weeks ago, me and Ren accidentally hiked 12 miles. To put that in context, it’s practically from the SSF Costco to AT&T Park. FUCK YOU NATURE. Anyway, I had the great idea of hiking solo on an unfamiliar trail in 91° weather today.

And then, I got lost and took a narrow ass cut. Still, I was undeterred. Until I ran into an abandoned car in the middle of my trail.

Now what kind of Texas Chainsaw Massacre kind of shit is that? I like to think I’m a white girl at heart with all the crazy extra curricular activities I enjoy, but this was all I needed to remind myself that I am indeed still a person of color. I jetted past that news headline waiting to happen, went down a steep hill, and wound up in the back of an apartment complex. Better there on the street than in the mountains though. Moral of the story? Hike with a buddy or stick to running the beach. For me at least.
