Everyone likes to claim they are a child of the 80s. I’m sorry boo-boo, but if you were born in 1989, you are not a child of the 80s. If you were born in 1981, but don’t know any of the following movies I’m about to mention, you still aren’t an 80s baby. And if you’ve watched the following movies, but can’t finish the following sentence, “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father …,” then you’re just a bad 80s baby. At any rate, I just wanted to put some of my younger readers up on game to some of my absolute favorite fantasy films of the 80s while the rest of us old folks sit back and reminisce. Read after the jump to see just how nerdy I am.
The Princess Bride: This movie is your typical fairytale with some added humor, and told as a story being read by a grandfather to his grandson. But what makes the movie so memorable are the characters. They all had their funny quirks, and signature movie limes like, “Aasssss youuuuu wiiiiiiish!” It also didn’t hurt that the hero Westley wasn’t bad to look at.
Neverending Story: This movie. Is just fucking crazy. Whoever wrote it must’ve been on shrooms or something. It’s about a parrallel world called Fantasia ruled by a “Child-like empress.” Unfortunately, she is ill because of something called “The Nothing,” which represents a lack of imagination in the world. The only people that can save her and Fantasia are Atreyu (who might’ve been my very first crush), and Sebastian the narrator of the story. Trippy shit, but good concept.
Legend: Once upon a time before Tom Cruise went fucking INSANE, he made this little gem about balance in the world, and how females always fuck it up by wanting to pet unicorns. OK, maybe not. But I absolutely loved this movie. Especially, the costume design. It has one of my favorite although dramatic interpretations of the devil, and I STILL love Dark Lilly’s outfit.
Labyrinth: I’m not sayin I memorize pretty much every single line of this movie. I’m not sayin I had a huge crush on David Bowie in it either (wtf?). Nor am I sayin it’s one of my top five favorite movies of all time. And I may or may not have the movie poster hanging on my wall. I’m. Just. Sayin.
